How to find the most popular industry keywords with Semrush

Hi there,

Ever ask yourself, "How do I find the most popular keywords for my market?"

It can be hard to pin down the right keywords to target—especially if your website is new.

Here's how I use Semrush to find the most popular keywords for any industry:

1. I use Market Explorer for an instant overview of the market.

Market Explorer is your new best friend when it comes to finding the top performers in an industry.

👉 Simply choose the country (or leave as worldwide) and add your domain URL to discover your competitors. If your site is new—or one without much traction yet—you can select from the dropdown list of industries.

👉 Select the top 10 or top 20 domains in the Growth Quadrant for a timeframe of six months or a year. Check who the "Leaders" and/or "Established Players" are in your market.

Bonus: Exclude any domains you wouldn't consider a direct competitor at this stage.

2. I discover the keywords the top performers use.

For this, you'll need the Keyword Gap tool.

👉 Add the top 3-5 domains you discovered in the previous step, and select the country database and the type of keywords you want (organic, paid, or PLA).

👉 Start with the "Shared" keywords (excluding any irrelevant branded ones). This way you can find the terms with the biggest search volumes and select the most relevant for you.

👉 Add your selections to a new keyword list.

Bonus: I like to create separate keyword lists, based on intent. Filter by informational, transactional, navigational, and commercial keywords and create a separate list for each category.

3. I get additional information using Keyword Manager.

Finally, I run a check on Keyword Manager. There, I collect information around each keyword in real time, at any time.

Simply refresh the metrics for one or all the keywords on your list, and check things like:

🚀 Prominent SERP features

🚀 How interest around them has evolved over time

Bonus: Monitor your website's daily ranking for these top keywords. Select the ones you want and send them directly to Position Tracking to keep track of your progress over time.

Now it's time for you to try this yourself. Let me know how it goes!

Until next time,
